ABOUT THE RANCHASSIST™ ROTATIONAL GRAZING PLANNER
The Rotational Grazing Planner is a temporary, map-based planning tool from RanchAssist™. It helps ranchers and livestock managers organize paddocks, forage assumptions, herd demand, move order, and projected graze/rest dates in one practical working plan.
WHY IT EXISTS
Rotational grazing decisions often live in several places at once: a pasture map, handwritten acreage notes, forage estimates, herd calculations, a move sequence, and a calendar. The Rotational Grazing Planner brings those working assumptions together so the relationship between land, herd demand, graze duration, and recovery timing is easier to review.
The tool is designed around a simple operational question:
Given the paddocks I plan to use, the forage assumptions I am using, and the herd I am moving, what does this temporary rotation look like?
WHAT THE PLANNER DOES
Users can map and edit named paddocks over satellite imagery or enter paddock acreage manually. The map can also include water points, gates, temporary fence lines, and a herd starting location.
For each paddock, users can enter:
- Acreage
- Estimated forage dry matter per acre
- Utilization percentage
- Target residual or reserve percentage
- Target recovery days
- Availability status
- Notes
Herd inputs can include:
- Livestock class
- Head count
- Average weight
- Daily dry-matter intake percentage
- Optional animal-unit equivalent
The planner can estimate:
- Available forage by paddock
- Daily herd dry-matter demand
- Estimated graze days by paddock
- Total grazing days
- Rotation cycle length
- Projected rest interval
- Acres per move
- Projected entry and exit dates
It can also warn when a planned return occurs before the user's own recovery target.
PLANNING MODES
The Rotational Grazing Planner supports multiple ways to organize graze days:
Capacity-based grazing days
Uses estimated available forage and daily herd demand to calculate an estimated paddock capacity.
Equal days per paddock
Applies a common graze-day target across the active rotation and highlights paddocks where the target exceeds estimated capacity.
Target rest-period planning
Uses the desired recovery interval and active paddock count to shape a temporary graze/rest plan.
Manual planning
Lets the user define the sequence and graze duration directly while retaining capacity and recovery comparisons.
SCENARIOS
The planner can temporarily adjust forage, herd size, utilization, recovery targets, and a user-defined conservative or drought factor. These are scenario controls for exploring assumptions. They are not forecasts.
SESSION-FIRST BY DESIGN
The Rotational Grazing Planner follows the RanchAssist session-first privacy model.
No RanchAssist account is required to use the standalone planner. RanchAssist does not require a hosted project database for the tool. Active work may use browser session storage for resilience during the current session.
For long-term editable work, users can save a RanchAssist .ra Project File to their own device and reopen it later.
The .ra file is distinct from reporting and interoperability exports such as:

- PNG map
- GeoJSON
- Copy Summary
WHY RANCHASSIST USES THIS MODEL
Field planning tools should remain practical and portable. Users should be able to make a plan, keep an editable local copy when they want one, and export results without creating an account simply to perform a calculation.
WHAT THE PLANNER IS NOT
The Rotational Grazing Planner is not:
- A remote forage-measurement system
- A pasture-growth forecast
- A guarantee of forage availability
- A guarantee of livestock performance
- A substitute for direct field observation
- A survey product
- A veterinary service
- An agronomic certification
- A regulatory compliance service
The planner organizes user-entered assumptions and calculates a temporary schedule from those assumptions.
FIELD CONDITIONS STILL GOVERN
Actual grazing capacity and recovery can change with weather, soil moisture, plant species, plant maturity, previous grazing pressure, animal needs, water access, terrain, management goals, and other field conditions.
A projected schedule should therefore be reviewed and adjusted as conditions change.
