RanchAssist™ Rotational Grazing Planner

Need help using the Rotational Grazing Planner?

Start by identifying which part of the workflow is causing the problem: map setup, paddock inputs, herd demand, rotation sequence, schedule results, project files, exports, or email sharing.

QUICK HELP

1. The map is not loading

The mapping experience requires the RanchAssist deployment administrator to configure the map service. End users should not be asked to enter a Mapbox token or developer credential.

If the site shows a "Map service unavailable" message, the deployment may not be fully configured. You can still use manual paddock acreage for the grazing-planning workflow.

2. I cannot find or draw my paddock

Try searching for a nearby address, ranch entrance, road, or place and then zoom to the correct field.

Once the map is positioned:

- Select Draw Paddock.

- Trace the working paddock boundary.

- Finish the polygon.

- Name the paddock.

- Review the calculated acreage.

- Enter your forage and recovery assumptions.

Map geometry is a planning measurement and is not a legal land survey.

3. My mapped acreage is not the value I want to use

Open the paddock details and use the manual acreage override when you intentionally want the planning model to use a different acreage than the drawn polygon.

4. My available-forage number looks wrong

Review:

- Paddock acreage

- Estimated forage dry matter per acre

- Utilization percentage

- Residual or reserve percentage

- Active scenario adjustments

- Paddock availability status

The tool does not remotely measure forage biomass. The result depends on the assumptions you enter.

5. My graze-day estimate looks wrong

Review the forage assumptions first, then confirm:

- Head count

- Average weight

- Daily dry-matter intake percentage

- Active herd-size scenario adjustment

Capacity-based graze days are derived from estimated available forage divided by estimated daily herd dry-matter demand.

6. I am seeing a recovery warning

A recovery warning means the projected rest interval is shorter than the recovery target entered for that paddock.

The warning is a schedule comparison. It does not mean RanchAssist has determined that the paddock is or is not biologically ready to graze.

7. I want to change the move order

Open the Rotation Sequence section and reorder the active paddocks. On mobile devices, use the move-up and move-down controls when drag-and-drop is inconvenient.

8. A paddock should not be in this rotation

Mark the paddock unavailable. It can remain in the project while being removed from the active sequence.

9. I refreshed the page

The tool may restore current work from browser session storage during the active browser session.

For long-term work, do not rely on session recovery. Save a RanchAssist .ra Project File.

10. How do I save my plan for later?

Choose Save Project and save the .ra file to your device.

The .ra file is the editable RanchAssist project format. Reopen it later with Open Project.

11. Can I use PDF or CSV to reopen the project?

No.

PDF / Print is a report.

CSV is tabular schedule output.

PNG is a visual map.

GeoJSON is spatial exchange data.

Copy Summary and Email are communication formats.

Use the .ra project file when you need to continue editing the full project later.

12. My .ra file will not open

Confirm that:

- It is a RanchAssist .ra project file.

- It was created by the Rotational Grazing Planner.

- The file has not been corrupted or manually altered.

- You are using a compatible version of the planner.

The application intentionally rejects incompatible or invalid files instead of silently discarding project state.

13. GeoJSON will not import

Confirm the file is valid GeoJSON. Polygon features can be used for paddocks, line features can represent temporary fence, and supported point features can represent field markers.

GeoJSON does not contain every planning input, so it is not a substitute for the complete .ra project file.

14. PNG export is not working

Map-image export can depend on browser and mapping-canvas behavior. If a PNG cannot be generated, use the Print / PDF report, GeoJSON, or another supported export.

15. Email sharing is not working

In the Google Apps Script deployment, email sharing uses a server-side MailApp function. The deployment must be correctly authorized to send email.

The user should never be asked to supply an email API key or SMTP credential.

16. I need to completely reset the tool

Use Clear Session / Start Over.

This removes the current unsaved project from the active browser session. It does not delete .ra files, PDFs, CSVs, PNGs, GeoJSON files, or other exports already saved to your device.

WHEN CONTACTING SUPPORT

Include:

- The page or feature you were using

- The exact message shown on screen

- The action you took immediately before the problem

- Your browser and device type

- Whether the issue happens again after reopening the tool

- Whether map functionality is involved

Do not send:

- API keys

- Mapbox tokens

- passwords

- authentication codes

- private credentials

- secrets embedded in screenshots or files

For .ra file issues, only share a project file if you are comfortable sharing the ranch, herd, map, notes, and other project information contained in it.

PLANNING QUESTIONS

RanchAssist can explain how the tool calculates and displays a result.

RanchAssist should not be treated as the source of the field assumptions themselves. Questions such as what forage dry matter, utilization rate, residual target, recovery period, or animal intake assumption is appropriate for a specific ranch can depend on local conditions and professional judgment.

The Rotational Grazing Planner is a planning aid, not agronomic, veterinary, legal, survey, engineering, or regulatory advice.
